Day 10- Songs you listen to when you are Happy,...
I once paid someone $250 to tell me I was melancholic. Hippocartes attributes melancholia to having too much black bile. Personally I like to describe it as having too much Philip Glass on your iPod. Those of us blessed with a melancholic disposition tend to dwell on things so my music collection is a storage locker, packed to the gunnels with old baggage that bears obvious signs of battle and...
Day 08- Short term goals for this month and why
This month is already drawing curtains. I’ll cut curing cancer from my short list. Get back into pilates, stat. I was as bendy as a cue tip for 8 months, then a cold took possession of me and routine and discipline got admissibly chucked out the window. My Wii Fit trainer reprimands me with motionless lips. Creeper. Commit to finishing a book, any book. Rather than having several strewn about the...
Maniacal Rage: The Problem with Facebook's... →
Here’s the thing about Facebook that really gets under my skin: They are slowly incorporating the features from every other independent web application on the internet. This is not inherently a problem—companies get bigger and they begin to have the resources to widen their feature set—the issue…
Day 06- Favorite super hero and why
At 5, it was Rainbow Brite At 12, it was Sailor Venus At 16, it was Willow
At 22, I’m trying to be my own hero.
Wow. That sounded more trite that than it was supposed to.
Take Two: Day 04- A habit that you wish you didn’t...
- Being passive about stuff. Things that bother me, relationships and organization.
- I’m not good at replying to text messages/e-mails instantaneously .
Work in progress.

Day 02- The meaning behind your Blog name
There’s an elegant mischievousness to darkness that I find quite liberating. It’s also a song by The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, whose lead singer I would go gay for. I thought it summed up my shit sleeping patterns quite eloquently.
The ‘jpmeijer’ bit is astoundingly my name and albeit, an eternal place holder until I had settled on a proper name. Now, I’m just too lazy to change it.

Day 01- A recent picture of you and 15 interesting...
My opinion of people is significantly upgraded upon discovery of people we mutually hate. i.e. Alec Baldwin, Katherine Heigl, Nicole Scherzinger’s boobs. People with poor grammar and selfish parking habits.
I think Eclipse mints are socially awkward. You can never subtly pry one from its noisy tin coffin. Way to be smooth about fresh breath.
Time is a strange concept to me; I have a poor...

Conducting In The Box
Musicality is the intersection between movement and sound. Music and dance have been bound to each other since before our species can remember itself, and the two cannot be split without a loss of efficacy. They are two sides of the same phenomenon—like electricity and magnetism. Musicality is motion. Motion is musicality. To say it plainly: without an understanding and fluency in motion,...

Why $1,700 Means Joel Stein is Rich
I’ve always believed the rich were different from you and me, but it turns out they’re different only from you. When I listened to the nuanced economic debate over whether the Bush tax cuts should be kept for rich households making more than $250,000, my overwhelming response was, I’m rich! My total income for 2009 was $288,115, placing me among the richest 2% of Americans....
